Ask Tiffany: People Don’t Want to Pay for Therapy Anymore

“Nobody wants to invest in long term, insight-oriented, get-to-the-root-of-it therapy anymore!”

I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard therapists lament this fact.

Okay, I’ll admit, I used to utter it myself. I’d frustratedly announce, to my equally irate analytic colleagues, “Nobody wants depth-oriented therapy anymore! Everybody wants a quick fix. Society is going down Down DOWN. We’re doomed.”

[Cue The Imperial March]

The unrelenting THEM was going to take down our entire profession.

I got news for you. There is no them.

There IS however, a reason why clients aren’t coming to you excited and eager to do the kind of psychotherapy that thrills you, that feeds you, that leaves you breathless and inspired to write Yalom-Stylee tomes.

Duuuuuuuuude. I just listened to Godin’s Tribe talk (and promptly bought the kindle book). It’s helping me think about how to frame who and what I do as I start to take the next step of networking.

Does it count as paying full high priced fee for my own therapy, if my insurance covers it?

Ha! If you have access to insurance that pays your therapist her full fee – HIGH FIVE! Use your resources!

I’d encourage you to extend the idea of paying full fee to consultants and other professionals, too. Practice valuing the work we all do in our profession and investing freely and with gratitude. Love it!
